Billy (Raúl Castillo), desperate to improve his circumstances, invests everything into a rapidly growing cryptocurrency, hoping to secure his future and buy a home. But just as quickly as his dream forms, it crumbles—the currency crashes, leaving him broke and without options. Refusing to accept this fate, he teams up with his friend Dom (Tony Cavalero) and tech-savvy online contact Eva (Melonie Diaz) to track down the person responsible and force him to repay his victims.

For those expecting a deep dive into the mechanics of cryptocurrency, this film doesn’t go there. But that’s the point—Billy doesn’t fully understand it either, and his ignorance is part of the story. Billy and his friends being out of their depth manifests in different ways such as an amusing scene where they shop for weapons in a supermarket while talking openly about their plans to a bubbly shop assistant, setting the stage for a situation that will very quickly get out of hand.

Typically, these films place the audience in the shoes of the victims, evoking fear and sympathy for those being terrorized. This film flips the script, positioning the invaders as the protagonists. The film makes this premise work by establishing clear, relatable motivations. One of the film’s greatest strengths is its thematic depth. With crypto scams making headlines regularly, Cold Wallet taps into the very real fear of financial ruin. It highlights how easily people, especially those in vulnerable positions, can be drawn into investment traps. The film also touches on the larger issue of wealth disparity—the idea that the rich often escape consequences while the less fortunate suffer. In a way, Cold Wallet offers a cathartic form of wish-fulfilment, where justice is delivered not through legal channels, but through direct, desperate action.
